Why Innjoo smartphones cost so little

Innjoo redefine everything

You have read about Innjoo’s smartphones – the i1s and the i2 – and how cheap they are. You may have been wondering what the catch is. Here is what Innjoo says about the subject:

We invent a new innovative business model, that is selling mobile at the cost while taking a longer potential revenue stream from software.

In simple English, that means Innjoo do not make any profit off their smartphones. Instead, they choose to sell them at production cost and make money from apps and services. Yes; they must have a lot of cash backing them up to choose this path. The company is based in Dubai, so that sort of explains things. Cash.

It is a bold move, and certainly not one that every manufacturer can or will pursue. Yet, it is one that is sure to spice things up in emerging markets, which are Innjoo’s primary focus.

Innjoo downloads and services

Innjoo say they are selling mobile devices at the cost while taking a longer potential revenue stream from software. They are already rolling out their first set of software services, namely: InnBrowser, a web browser; and InnCloud, a cloud backup service. I have downloaded both apps and taken them for a spin.

InnBrowser Review

InnBrowser Homepage
InnBrowser is a visually appealing web browser. In the home screen, the address bar, which also doubles as search bar, is located at the top. Bookmarks are directly below that in circular icons. Next is a list of most visited websites. At the bottom of the app in a horizontal bar are Back and Front buttons, Home button, Menu button, and Tabs button.

The Home button is not programmeable. It always returns the user to the above described homepage. The Menu button gives the user access to extra buttons to add bookmarks, view existing bookmarks, view history, share the page, Settings, as well as an exit button.

The Tabs button lets you view and switch between open tabs. I opened up to 12 tabs, after which I stopped counting. Here is the Tabs view:
InnBrowser Tabs

Here is what your favourite mobile blog looks like in InnBrowser:
InnBrowser MOBILITY

InnBrowser gives you the option to enable/disable Location Access, Adobe Flash and Advertising. It supports password saving, clearing of cache and history, JavaScript, Cookies, and more. It also lets you choose to restore open tabs on start. You are also able to adjust text size in the browser. There is support for text reflow in here too.

In use, InnBrowser loads pages fast and feels breezy to handle. So far, it feels like a well thought out job.

InnCloud Review

InnCloud Login
InnCloud is an online (cloud) backup service. At first launch, you have to create a user account. Pleasantly, it took less than 20 seconds or so to do that. A hate lengthy signup forms, so you have no idea how good it felt.

After creating my account, I logged in without any issues. Once inside, you see your user number and a count of your backup activities. I am user number 2,361 on InnCloud. Wow! 2,360 people beat me to it. Oh well…

InnCloud Moverick

Below that are presented the available services. For now, those are just contacts backup and restore. You can edit your account details and profile by tapping on your profile name at the top. For now, that is all there is to InnCloud, but I envisage that more features will be added to it over time.

Open to all Android smartphones

Both InnBrowser and InnCloud are open to all Android smartphones. In other words, you can install them not just on Innjoo phones, but also on your Android smartphones from HTC, Samsung, Sony, TECNO, etc.

InnOS Preview

InnOS coming soon
Innjoo also have plans for their own OS. At the least, it will be a slightly modified affair similar to what Gionee are doing. At the most extreme, it will be an outright fork of Android, similar to what Amazon and Nokia did. if a fork, Innjoo Store (another existing app) will outright replace Play Store. Interesting days ahead with Innjoo.

In the meantime, you can download InnBrowser and InnCloud here: InnBrowser | InnCloud

How to fix the low app storage error on your Innjoo smartphone

$

Innjoo flashing

Like a number of other Android smartphones, Innjoo’s i1, i1s and i2 are plagued by the low memory allocation for app installation. This means that after downloading a number of apps, every time you need to download and install more apps, the phone gives you an error that there is insufficient space available.

Innjoo offers two solutions:

Emergency Solution — Quick & Easy

All you have to do is download an app called Clean Master. If you are already getting the insufficient storage error, you will have to delete one app or uninstall an update to be able to install Clean Master. You can follow the instructions on how to go about using Clean Master here.

Long-term Solution — Stable & Forever

A permanent solution is to flash your Innjoo smartphone with an official ROM. This will enlarge the allocated app storage space to about 3GB once and for all. Problem fixed permanently. If you are sure you are savvy enough to handle a flashing operation on your phone, click here for instructions.

A few users have done the flashing and are now happy with their smartphones. Whatever option you choose, do share your experience below.

Why the Innjoo business model should be restricted to hardware.

The guys behind the brand, Innjoo announced their presence in Nigeria with the Innjoo i1s model and its successor the Innjoo i2, an upgrade in features to the i1s. These phones were released at ridiculously low prices, such that you wonder if they ever make profit.

Word has come out that they intend to make profit from software and services, from the Innjoo store etc, and this is the part that kinda bothers me. How will they eventually make profit? Considering the Nigerian smartphone market, How many people in the first place will buy the Innjoo phone? And how many people will end up paying for and or subscribing to the services they will offer? What will differentiate their services from the other online bands services we already have? What will make their service so good to warrant that we leave what we have and start paying for the Innjoo service?

The name alone ‘Innjoo’ sounds so hard to pronounce, and it won’t be a bad idea if they changed it to something easier to enunciate. To be honest, typical Nigerians like me wouldn’t care about any service they will render. We haven’t even fully embraced cloud storage and services in these parts, me included. This is mostly due to expensive data costs. Personally, if I owned an Innjoo today, the first thing I’ll rather do is uninstall the Innjoo Store and any other pre-installed bloatware app. I can go further by using a razor blade to scrape off the name ‘Innjoo’ from the face of the phone, and neatly cover it with black tape, I actually did this with the first TECNO Android phone I bought. The gods forgive me:-)

For them to really be a success in a place like Nigeria, they need to step things up, find a way to reach out to more people, and possibly spread out service centers for after sales services. Then their services should be exclusive, and tied to hardware, such that if you don’t own an Innjoo, you wouldn’t be able to enjoy their service. If it’s just by making apps store, InnBrowser and InnCloud storage app, these are simple apk files I can install and delete as I please. They should create a niche and differentiate from what we know already.

All the same, I’m not a staff of Innjoo, so I don’t know what they’re planning to achieve. Let’s watch and see what becomes of their venture. The mobile world is a really volatile one. Alas, we can wake up tomorrow and Innjoo will be all over the place. Who knows? Meanwhile, I fold arms and watch. *takes a sip from my cup of tea*

I was sitting around doing nothing serious this morning when I had the inspiration to take a photo of the various smartphones and platforms represented in MOBILITY at the moment. The above photo is the result. In it are the following mobile devices:

Innjoo logo

Back in February when Innjoo launched the One, CEO of the company told the audience that the brand had sold 300,000 smartphones and tablets since June 2014 when it hit the market with its products.

Other interesting Innjoo facts are:

  • Over 2million apps have been downloaded from InnStore
  • InnBrowser has over 250,000 users weekly

The brand is looking to revolutionise the market by addressing the pain points of Android through customisation of the OS (InnOS) and by relying on internet marketing instead of selling through middle men.

Innjoo One – Best Screen Guard packaging?

$

“Never judge a book by it’s cover” so goes the popular saying. I believe though that very few people will disagree that packaging is great! It attracts. The bible even says that; “…man looks at the outward appearance…” So, it’s logical that since we’re living in this world and interacting with men, outward appearance is a big deal to a certain extent. Anyway, this post isn’t about human being’s physical appearance!

But of course oftentimes, when we purchase anything we end up discarding the package and concentrate on the content – because after all that is what we PAID for. I ordered for the screen guard for my relatively “old” InnJoo One last Saturday and it was delivered this morning. I shouldn’t have been too surprised by the packaging that greeted me though based on their antecedents. The InnJoo One itself came in a very beautiful package that rivals the iPhones of this world.

They even threw in a practice piece, screen dust absorption sticker and application card in addition to the good old screen guard! Check the pictures below and let me know if this isn’t probably the best packaged mobile phone screen guard you’ve seen!

Innjoo Launch (1)

Over fifty fans, bloggers and relevant stakeholders came over to Trinity Mall, Awolowo Way Ikeja, on Thursday 21st of March 2015 to take part in the device launch from Innjoo. As part of celebration of the Innjoo brand and their marked achievements in Nigeria.

The show took off an hour after the scheduled 6 pm with the very hilarious MC thrilling the crowds with nifty jokes and comments. A group of volunteers were called to the stage to vie for a phone, and each of them had to do a free style session in front of the crowd. Two contestants were left on the stage after the session, and they were asked to dance so that the crowd will decide the final winner. After the dancing, a clear winner didn’t emerge . Mr Robert, Head of Innjoo Nigeria intervened and gave the two finalists a phone each.

Mr Robert Speech

Up next, Mr. Robert Liang made a speech, talking about Innjoo brand and their achievements in Nigeria, he also made some revelations:

  • The InnBrowser now has 400k users.
  • Innjoo received 3700 paid pre-orders for the Innjoo One. (A first in Nigeria)
  • During the first sale of the Innjoo i1s on Jumia, 10,000 units were sold in 10 days.

Subsequently, he launched the Innjoo Fire discussing all its specifications and features, also stating that they will try to set the price at N18,000. “The Innjoo Max will be released sometime later in the year, possibly June”, he mentioned.

Me and Innjoo

Finally food and drinks were shared, and we had time to finger a preview unit of the Innjoo Fire. Believe you me, I was impressed with the device. Fine design, 2GB RAM, 16GB (fully partitioned) internal storage, 5MP/5MP camera etc. etc. and all for less than 20k!! Feed your eyes on the pictures.

Innjoo Fire (7)

The Innjoo Fire arrived Mobility Towers today, and it was exciting to finally get a grasp of this lovely device. This phone is the latest offering from Innjoo and the amazing thing here is that you get 2GB RAM for the lowest price possible.

Innjoo Fire (6)

The phone pack is very similar to that of the Innjoo One, probably a cost cutting measure, but we really only care about what’s in the box. Opening up the pack you see the phone itself, then underneath you find the manuals, USB wall charger and a small pack containing the earphones and USB cable.

Innjoo Fire (5)

The phone itself looks good with a metal frame around the sides. The back case has a slightly rough texture for a good grip. We had the black unit, and going through the phone everything looks so fast and fluid. I had to truly confirm this phone shipped with 2GB RAM. We also have a fully partitioned 16GB ROM, 5MP/5MP camera, you can see the full specifications HERE.

Innjoo Fire (8)

This phone will officially start selling June 1st on the Jumia Mobile Megathon for an amazing price of just N17,000. Did I mention this phone also has a notification light? Expect a full review soonest Mobility style 😉  meanwhile enjoy some more pictures.

What’s up with the free data bundled with Innjoo and Infinix devices?

On a regular basis, Infinix and Innjoo promise free data with the purchase of specific devices from Jumia Nigeria. You hear something like “3GB free for 12 months”, “2015MB free data”, or some other free offer. Well, one mobilista says that he has made four purchases and not gotten the promised data:

Kayode F. AKINRELERE (@KayAkinrelere) tweeted at 3:45 PM on Sun, Jun 07, 2015:
Has anyone ever gotten any free data with an @Innjoo or @InfinixMobility phone bought on @JumiaNigeria? 4 devices now: #noshow cc @moverick
(https://twitter.com/KayAkinrelere/status/607558991363895296)

I am aware that some buyers of the Infinix Hot Note had trouble activating the free MTN data that was bundled.. At some point, it was supposedly resolved and what buyers needed to do was text “Infinix” to 131 for new MTN subscribers and ‘Free” to 131 for existing MTN subscribers.

Have you purchased any smartphone from these brands with the promise of free data and gotten the data? If yes, what did you have to do to get the freebie? Do share, perhaps the info can be of help to others facing issues. If you didn’t get the free data…well, tell us your experience as well.

Fire Burning Bright: Innjoo Fire Review

$
0

Launched at a glowing event few weeks ago, the Innjoo Fire has been hyped as the Fire that burns brightest among the low end budget devices. Undoubtedly, this device is arguably the cheapest 2GB RAM device in the market. The mere mention of the price of this device could make you wonder. Is there a catch? Why so cheap? Must I buy this device?

Innjoo Fire

First, let’s look at its key features:

  • 5.0-inch screen, with 960×540 pixels (220 PPI).
  • Android 4.4 Kitkat with InnOS 1.0.
  • MediaTek MT6592 chipset with Quad-core 1.3 GHz processor and 2 GB of RAM.
  • 5MP back camera with LED flash, pixel count 2560 x 1920 pixels and Video recording of 1080p.
  • 5MP front-facing camera, with pixel count 2560 x 1920 pixels and 480p video recording.
  • Fully partitioned 16GB internal storage (13 GB useable).
  • Glowing notification light.
  • Dual SIM support, Both Micro-SIM, 3G switchable.
  • 2500mAh battery.

Main Disadvantages

  • Low volume output.
  • Get’s warmed up on heavy usage with charging.

Read the full detailed Innjoo Fire full specifications , our Innjoo Fire hands on and Unboxing experience.
Hardware and Design

The Innjoo Fire has a fine metal lining around it’s sides with a roughly textured back plastic cover that offers a really good grip. The power buttons are on the right side while the volume buttons are on the left. The edges are rounded. The phone looks beautiful, and doesn’t look it’s price at all. With added notification light, the body and design just fit.

Software and Display

Here we have a 960×540 pixels resolution with 220 ppi, which is not particularly bad considering the price. Sunlight legibility is poor here, as with the case on similar priced devices. The Innjoo Fire runs Inn UI which consists of the Inn launcher and a couple of Inn apps. Running Android version 4.4 Kit Kat, the software was tweaked with some subtle useful features like adjustments for various volume streams, Double Tap to Wake and a couple of other cool gesture control features. The internal storage of 16 GB was fully partitioned with 13 GB useable, we also checked to be sure the RAM was actually 2 GB (see screenshot).

Innjoo Fire Storage RAM

Camera

The Innjoo Fire comes with a 5MP back camera with flash and also 5MP in front. The back camera takes decent pictures both in we’ll lit and dark places. The flash is fairly good for what it’s worth, while the selfie camera is crystal clear, though it doesn’t cover a wide angle.

Multimedia

The Innjoo Fire’s loudspeaker produces sounds at low volumes. This was also the case with the Innjoo One. Please if this matters to you, look for a powerful music player with equalizers or install Viper4Android, or better still, root and flash in Dolby Digital. Video playback here is okay, handling almost every file format. It also had good viewing angles.

Multitasking /Performance

The Innjoo Fire comes with a 1.3GHz quad core processor. Apps run fairly smooth like on Android phones with similar specs. Now here’s the good part, this guy handles multitasking like a boss – apps will never close down on you. Open 5, 6, 7 apps minimize all, come back and they are all still there the way you left it them. It reminds me of the Symbian days of multitasking. Below are the AnTuTu and Quadrant test scores.

The 2500 mAh battery here lasts you throughout a day of mild usage. On steady 3G, and heavy pressing we were able to churn out 10 hours (See screenshot). The extra 3 hours were standby time.

Miscellaneous

The Innjoo Fire has notification lights that glow whenever you’re buzzed, Double Tap to Wake and other cool gestures. The user interface, especially on the notification bar is quite bland, more like that found in Android Jelly Bean OS. The in-call volume here is loud and clearly audible. This device gets really warm when you use it heavily while charging it.

Final Words

The bottom of the phone segment is where the numbers are and Innjoo has taken huge steps towards capturing these numbers. The competition at the low end gets stiffer by the day, but the Innjoo Fire poses as the one shining brightest. With 2GB RAM (a multitasking nirvana), 16 GB inbuilt storage and a 5MP camera for selfies, the Innjoo Fire clearly dusts the Infinix Hot as the best budget (value for money) smartphone in the market. If you’re looking for the best specs at the cheapest possible price, then look to this chap.

Chinese brands

Flashback to mid-2012 when TECNO started making Android devices smartphones. If you can recall, TECNO started with making those loud mouthed dual-SIM feature phones, so people (including me) were skeptical on how good their Android phones would be.

Improvements came with subsequent models and gradually TECNO took Nigeria by storm. We may ask, how did they achieve it? The answer is PRICE. Yes. Price was the determining factor. TECNO offered usable smartphones at very affordable prices compared to the likes of the then Nokia, Blackberry, and Samsung.

I can recall buying a TECNO N3, bundled with an 8GB memory card for just N13,500, It was a very good deal then. The phone was revolutionary and sold in droves. Cheap smartphones are what took the likes of TECNO to where they are now. The tides have gradually turned and we’re getting to see Chinese brands (including TECNO ) selling devices for higher prices ranging from N35,000 up to N50,000.

This really shouldn’t come as a surprise. Just like every other emerging business. You start small, sell products or offer services for free to grab market and mind share. Then gradually charge for services and increase price of products to make actual profits. We shouldn’t be shocked when we see the likes of TECNO selling a phone for N45,000. In the end every business has to make profit.

The important thing is that they don’t forget how they got to where they are, and don’t totally abandon those uber cheap range of (value for money) smartphones that gave them popularity.

So, suck it up and deal with it. I’m certain we’ll get to see more higher priced devices from Chinese manufacturers.
